Brent Oliver Presents Promoting the finest in Edmonton's live music http://www.brentoliver.com An evening with the Mike Plume Band - REUNION TOUR 2008-09-02: Canadian singer/songwriter Mike Plume fronts his roots-based namesake band, which consists of guitarist Dave Klym, bassist Derek Mazurek, and drummer Ernie Basiliadis. Plume's bandmates are longtime friends, but his first record, 1993's Songs From a Northern Town, was recorded with a session band in Austin, TX. Plume didn't recruit his friends as bandmates until 1996's Jump Back Kerouac; this album won the band an ARIA nomination for Best Pop/Light Rock Artist on Record. Later that year the Mike Plume band released Simplify, an acoustic set that was recorded in under six hours. Touring with groups like Blue Rodeo built the group's following, and their 1998 album Song & Dance, Man won them more fans and awards. The album was released in the U.S. a year later. venue: The Ironwood, Calgary http://www.brentoliver.com/show_detail.php?show_id=64 http://www.brentoliverpresents.com/_posters/2008-09-02 An evening with the Mike Plume Band - REUNION TOUR An evening with the Mike Plume Band - REUNION TOUR 2008-09-03: Canadian singer/songwriter Mike Plume fronts his roots-based namesake band, which consists of guitarist Dave Klym, bassist Derek Mazurek, and drummer Ernie Basiliadis. Truth is, he's both, but more importantly, Lee Perry is a towering figure in reggae -- a producer, mixer, and songwriter who, along with King Tubby, helped shape the sound of dub and made reggae music such a powerful part of the pop music world. Along with producing some of the most influential acts (Bob Marley & the Wailers and the Congos to name but two) in reggae history, Perry's approach to production and dub mixing was breathtakingly innovative and audacious -- no one else sounds like him -- and while many claim that King Tubby invented dub, there are just as many who would argue that no one experimented with it or took it further than did Lee Perry. venue: Urban Lounge, Edmonton http://www.brentoliver.com/show_detail.php?show_id=67 http://www.brentoliverpresents.com/_posters/2008-09-03 Lee 'Scratch' Perry An evening with the Mike Plume Band - REUNION TOUR 2008-09-04: Canadian singer/songwriter Mike Plume fronts his roots-based namesake band, which consists of guitarist Dave Klym, bassist Derek Mazurek, and drummer Ernie Basiliadis. Hailing from Montreal and Toronto respectively, both women left untenable home situations at fourteen, found music instead of bad ends, and lived to sing the tales. The interplay between these two stunning performers is truly something to behold - and after honing it relentlessly in 13 countries in the last 12 months, the ladies are set to release a true testament to their bond and to their tremendous growth as writers in the last years. Rolling Stone magazine voted it the fourth best album of the year, and Spin voted the band as 2006 Artist of the Year. TV on the Radio is comprised of Tunde Adebimpe (vocals/loops), David Andrew Sitek (guitars/keyboards/loops), Kyp Malone (vocals/guitars/loops) along with Jaleel Bunton (drums) and Gerard Smith (bass). Since their beginnings with their EP, Tin Type, home of the cult hit, “Oh, Alberta!”, to their Juno-nominated, debut full length Ambassador, Elliott BROOD have earned the praise of connoisseurs and critics alike. They’ve won over legions of fans with their raw and energetic live shows and their atmospheric, richly crafted records, making a name for themselves worldwide. They’ve carried their tune through seven cross Canada marathons, including the headlining spot on the Exclaim! Magazine sponsored Wood, Wires & Whiskey tour and opening shows for Wilco, Blue Rodeo, Corb Lund and The Sadies. They have completed three European tours, playing Festivals throughout Europe, Great Britian and Scandinavia, including an opening spot in Paris with Broken Social Scene. The BROOD have toured through the USA with Do, Make, Say Think and early this year, they made their debut in Australia with the release of Ambassador on ABC Records in the spring of 2008. Alongside the Juno nomination, Ambassador earned The BROOD a Galaxy Rising Star award for Best New Artist 2006, landing them on Best of Lists from The Globe & Mail to CBC Radio 3, a four-star review from British music mag heavy, UNCUT, and kept them on the college radio charts for over 17 weeks. With the release of their new record, Mountain Meadows, comes a new chapter. It marks the evolution of Elliott BROOD from a backwoods character into a timeless figure. Recorded in Town halls, front rooms, back rooms and good old recording studios, the album’s wandering melodies are driven by rusty guitars and aching vocals that waltz around charming piano lines while ukuleles and banjos sway to and fro between a chorus of horns. It’s sunnier the higher you climb the Mountain, but in the Meadows below lay darker themes each with their own lore. venue: The Pawn Shop, Edmonton http://www.brentoliver.com/show_detail.php?show_id=75 http://www.brentoliverpresents.com/_posters/2008-09-17 Elliott Brood Elliott Brood 2008-09-18: Stalking shadows on the prairies with a compass and set of matches, shaking the mountains loose with howls and footstomps and, settled in meadows, while whispering tales under darkening skies, obsessed with history or historically obsessed, either way, Elliott BROOD have a penchant for stories they just can’t shake. Whether she's out on the down-low with a melancholy moan, or chasing hellhounds with a strident tone, it's a voice that can stop you in your tracks. Ndidi is first and foremost a blues singer. From the jazzy bounce of "Hornblower" to the hard-rockin' punch of "Hey There," from the spooky lament of "Wicked Lady" to the traditional voice-and-drum gospel wail of "This May Be The Last Time," she's steeped in the blues, and talented enough to make you feel it. And she's found considerable success in the genre. She has performed at Toronto's Massey Hall in the Women's Blues Revue. Birds are born to fly, politicians were born to lie, big fat guys with giant beards were born to ride their machines without getting hassled by the man, and Carolyn Mark was born to make music. Ever since first taking to the stage as Templeton the rat in her elementary school's musical version of Charlotte's Web, show business has been the main driving force in Carolyn's life. After coming to the obvious conclusion that musicians were much more fun to hang around with than actors, in the early 90's Carolyn formed her first band... all-girl surfy twang popsters, The Vinaigrettes. This was the beginning of a love affair with music, musicians and the road that, even after 15+ years of crazy hard work, still puts the nitro in her funny car. After the Vinaigrettes, Carolyn did brief stints in such bands as The Metronome Cowboys and The Fixin's before, in 2000, making her Mint Record debut with her first solo album, Party Girl. Since then, and with the help of a revolving cast of Can-Country super stars including, but not limited to, Tolan McNeil, Garth Johnson,Ford Pier, Nathan Tinkham, Corb Lund, NQ Arbuckle, Luke Doucet, Amy Honey, Greg MacDonald, Neko Case and Carey Mercer, she has released four more highly acclaimed albums. As well, she has also travelled thousands of miles entertaining crowds of 4 to 4000... touring Canada, the United States, the UK, Norway and Italy. She has shared the stage with such talented musicians as Jenny Whitely, Hank & Lily, Luther Wright, Sarah Harmer, Kelly Hogan, Lederhosen Lucil, Geoff Berner, Joel Plaskett, The Handsome Family, Neil Hamburger, JT and The Clouds, The Shiftless Rounders, NQ Arbuckle, Wanda Jackson,The Waco Brothers, The Sadies and Blue Rodeo. July 2, 2007 marks the release of Carolyn Mark's 6th Mint album, Nothing Is Free, described by Carolyn as her "woodsy, introspective album". Appropriately enough, Nothing Is Free was recorded by Myke Hall at Beaver Point Hall (between visits from the ladies drum circle and a teenage karate class!) on British Columbia's scenic Salt Spring Island. Along for the ride this time were guitar and bass virtuoso Paul Pigat (Cousin Harley), guitar and mandolin heavyweight Paul Rigby (Neko Case), expert vocalist Emilie Rhone (Fishing Derby, Antler) and vivacious violinist and vocalist, Diona Davies (Po' Girl, Geoff Berner, ESL). Additional help was ably rendered by Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira of Po' Girl and the mythical Calvin Dick (Neckbeard). venue: The Pawn Shop, Edmonton http://www.brentoliver.com/show_detail.php?show_id=77 http://www.brentoliverpresents.com/_posters/2008-10-10 Carolyn Mark The Acorn 2008-10-11: Spawned in the fertile swampland of Canada’s national capital, The Acorn has been creating experimental folk and music since early 2004. The project was initially the brain/lovechild of Rolf Klausener, who composed a series of gorgeous electro-acoustic folk tunes under the name. However, when his interest in bedroom electronics waned, Klausener decided to surround himself with a group of short to medium-sized musicians: Jeffrey, Howie and Jeff, who Voltron-like turned The Acorn into a full band concern. In July 2004, they released a lush, mostly instrumental tribute to the idyllic and vowel-heavy Outaouais region, called The Pink Ghosts. And in the fall of 2005, they released the Blankets! EP, a more melodically focused effort, which garnered them glowing praise from dozens of music blogs, the CBC, Exclaim! Magazine, as well as a top 50 spot on Canada’s National Campus charts. venue: The Pawn Shop, Edmonton http://www.brentoliver.com/show_detail.php?show_id=80 http://www.brentoliverpresents.com/_posters/2008-10-11 The Acorn Gogol Bordello 2008-10-15: “With SUPER TARANTA! Gogol Bordello is going to conquer the world,” boasts Eugene Hutz, Gogol bandleader and agent provocateur. “Everything on the album is taken to the next level. It’s more direct, more abstract, more focused, with more dark humor. The dub parts are deeper; the fast parts are faster, its pure orgasmo hysteria.” Gogol Bordello chose producer Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, PJ Harvey) to help them bring their extreme vision to vibrant life. “Victor has been a fan since the beginning of the band and we often spoke about making an album together. He’s not afraid to experiment in any way; he’ll go wherever we’re willing to go. If we say: ‘This track is gypsy speed metal dub,’ he says: ‘OK let’s do it.’ No hesitation.” Van Vugt’s fearlessness was a perfect compliment to Gogol’s wide open approach. His analogue studio in New York is defiantly old school. He doesn’t use Apple's Protools to add the magic when it isn’t there. With his help, the band made a record that sounds like Gogol Bordello backed by artists Manu Chao and System of a Down. venue: Edmonton Event Centre, Edmonton http://www.brentoliver.com/show_detail.php?show_id=78 http://www.brentoliverpresents.com/_posters/2008-10-15 Gogol Bordello
